Shocque
Hi -I'm Shocque. Here's a riddle for you. The thing I'm thinking of can't be seen with your eyes, but it can move both air and water and it makes waves inside your head.
Yes - It's sound, of course.
There was a time I didn't hear anything. Then my friends at Widex gave me an ear that actually works (you can see my 'operation' here!) and I discovered the world of sound. It burst on me like an explosion! At first it was all a mess of noise; I couldn't tell one sound from another. Now I can tell loud sounds, like a race car engine, from soft sounds like a kitten's purr, and I can tell high notes, like a squeaky toy, from low notes like thunder. I can also tell the sounds that I hate - like fingernails scraping down a blackboard - from the sounds I love, like my favourite band (though some might say my favourite band sounds exactly like fingernails on a blackboard!).
My new job is to meet people all over the country to help get the message of hearing conservation out there. My experiences were so amazing I started a blog so everybody could read about my experiences!
Sometimes when I stop and think about just how many millions of different sounds there are, it simply amazes me that human ears can take them all in and tell them apart without any effort, and without ever needing to rest; human ears are on the job 24 hours a day, seven days a week. And it started me wondering - what IS sound? And HOW do ears work, exactly?

Watch out Winnipeg, Manitoba!
I am going to Winnipeg! Woot! It has been ages since I last got out, so this should be a ton of fun. The plan is to host some workshops for the teens and get some talking going on about music, noise, and sounds all around that are way too loud. We will also get time to measure the loudness of their MP3 players and listen to their ideas of why and how they like to listen. To help them protect their hearing when exposed to dangerously loud sounds, I will give them some 'Spark Plugs', which are foam earplugs used by the guys at NASCAR, that come in funky swirly colors! Wish me luck...I hear it is cold there this time of year!
